Master's Degree in Biomedical Science

Students interested in pursuing advanced studies in biomedical science may obtain a Master's Degree in Biomedical Science, taking the thesis, or non-thesis option. General requirements are described in the Graduate Catalog.

The non-thesis option is tailored to students seeking to solidify their knowledge base in order to apply to health professional schools. The thesis option is geared towards those students interested in pursuing biomedical research.

The University's general graduate admission requirements must be achieved, including a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 in the last 60 credits of the undergraduate degree, and the completion of the GRE with a minimum score of 1000. The department does not consider the MCAT or DAT for admission purposes. Prerequisites for the master's degree program include one year each of biology, chemistry and physics: one semester each of biochemistry and organic chemistry; and at least two upper-division biology classes. A personal statement explaining career goals is required as well as three letters of recommendation, at least 2 of which must be from former professors.

For students entering the program in Spring 2009, the degree requires 30 credits, 3 of which may be taken as upper division undergraduate course at the 4000 level or higher with the approval of the student's advisor. Current courses that may be used toward this degree are listed below. Any course not on this list must be approved by the departmental graduate committee if it is to be used to satisfy degree requirements.
