The process of accreditation provides quality assurance in education to determine whether a program meets established standards for function, structure, and performance.
The accreditation process also fosters institutional and program improvement.
Specifically for medical school, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) helps meet the requirement of most state boards of licensure that U.S. medical
schools be accredited by as a condition for licensure of their graduates. Florida is a state which requires accreditation.
The UMMSM was visited by a 5-member team in February 2009, with February 24 devoted to the regional campus. Preparations to assemble information about various aspects of the medical program were complete by December 2008.
This information was collected in the "self-study" year, and used to create a database.
The accreditation team was composed of individuals who hold various positions in medical education leadership
in the 126 US and 17 Canadian medical schools.
At UMMSM, 11 self-study committees are established to assemble the database. They are:
Steering Committee
Administration and Governance
Undergraduate Medical Education
Student Affairs
Facilities and Library
Faculty and Professional Affairs
Graduate Student Education and Research
Graduate Medical and Continuing Medical Education
Women and Minority Affairs
Student Self-Study
A preliminary report was provided to the Regional Campus in July 2009. A final decision on accreditation status is pending.
