Research Distinction Track Application and Admission Process

The student submits an online initial application in January of Year 2.

Initial Application and Required Documents

  1. Student must indicate their class year, name of primary faculty mentor and initial submission.
  2. Student must upload the following documents:
    • Independent Research Plan (IRP)
      Download Template (Save file to your device to complete and sign.)
      The IRP outlines the student and mentor expectations and the specific research plan including timeline thru Year 4 with specific milestones.
    • Research Activity Log
      Download Template
      This log provides a report of the additional research activities completed by the student from Year 1 thru time of initial track application. Students may use this log or create their own if preferred.
    • CITI Responsible Conduct for Research (RCR) Training Certificate
      Current RCR training certificate. This online course must be completed every three years. RDT students must maintain current RCR training thru Year 4.
    • Research to Publication (BMJ UCSF) Online Course (https://rtop.bmj.com/)
      All track specified prerequisite module completion certificates are required.

    • Statement of Research Interest
      A narrative (1-page maximum) describing their research interests, academic and career goals and how they plan to reach them. Student may also describe previous research experience if applicable.
    • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
    • Primary Faculty Mentor Nomination Letter
      The letter must indicate support of the student's RDT application.
  3. Student must electronically sign their application and submit.

Application submission does not guarantee acceptance into the RDT.

Submissions will be administratively reviewed. Incomplete submissions will be returned indicating specifics and steps to resubmit. Complete submissions will be forwarded to the Medical Research and Scholarship Committee (MRSC) for admission review and determination. Student selection will be based on academic standing, completion of track prerequisites, statement of research interest, research experience (CV), faculty mentor’s nomination letter and research significance, innovation and/or approach as indicated in their IRP. Students and their primary mentors will be informed of the admission determination in February of Year 2.
