The resident experience in neurology at Delray Medical Center, during the residents’ first year, will include two months of supervised clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with the full range of neurological disorders/conditions.
The resident experience in inpatient psychiatry at Delray Medical Center Fair Oaks Pavilion will include four months in year one. During this time, they will have significant and increasing responsibility for the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of the full range of general psychiatric patients needing inpatient care.
The resident experience in internal medicine at Delray Medical Center will include five months in year one. The clinical experience during this time will include assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of the wide range of complex medical illnesses.
Geriatric Psychiatry and Medicine
The resident experience in geriatric psychiatry during year one will include a one-month rotation at Delray Medical Center on a geriatric medicine service. Their experience will focus on the areas unique to the care of the elderly. Each resident’s geriatric psychiatry experience will include diagnosis and management of mental disorders in geriatric patients with coexistent medical disorders. The experience will include management of the cognitive component of degenerative disorders, basic neuropsychological testing of cognitive functioning in the elderly, and management of drug interactions.
The resident experience in inpatient psychiatry at Delray Medical Center Fair Oaks Pavilion will include six months in year two. During this time, they will have significant and increasing responsibility for the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of the full range of general psychiatric patients needing inpatient care.
The resident experience during year two in addiction psychiatry at Delray Medical Center Fair Oaks Pavilion will be incorporated into the six-month inpatient psychiatry experience, focusing on the evaluation and clinical management of patients with substance abuse/dependence problems, including substantial exposure to dual diagnosis cases. Residents will have experiences with treatment modalities that include: detoxification, overdose management, and maintenance pharmacotherapy; the use of therapeutic techniques that address the psychological and social consequences of addiction, to include confronting and intervening in chronic addiction rehabilitation used in recovery stages from pre-contemplation to maintenance; self-help groups.
The resident experience during year two in consultation-liaison at Delray Medical Center Fair Oaks Pavilion will include three months during which residents consult, under supervision, on other medical and surgical services. They will see the full range of patients of patients taking on gradually increasing levels or responsibility for the patients and care teams that they consult.
The resident experience, during year two, in emergency psychiatry at Delray Medical Center Fair Oaks Pavilion will be three months on a supervised psychiatric emergency service. The resident experiences will include crisis evaluation and management, and triage of psychiatric patients. Residents will also have additional on-call experiences during the course of their training.
In order to achieve a continuity clinic-like experience in PGY-2, residents will spend a half-day a week at South County Mental Health Center (SCMHC) to provide an initial exposure to outpatient psychiatry.
The resident experience in outpatient psychiatry at South County Mental Health Center will be full time during year three. During year three they will have 12 months of organized, continuous, and supervised outpatient experience. Each resident will have significant experience treating outpatients longitudinally for at least one year, to include initial evaluation and treatment of ongoing individual psychotherapy patients, some of whom will be seen weekly. They will participate in multiple treatment modalities that emphasize developmental, biological, psychological, and social approaches to outpatient treatment, and the application of psychosocial rehabilitation techniques for the evaluation and treatment of differing disorders in a chronically-ill patient population. Residents will continue to carry a portion of their outpatient caseload into year four.
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
Incorporated into the outpatient psychiatry experience, the PGY-3 resident experience in child and adolescent psychiatry will include 12 months of part-time organized clinical experience at South County Mental Health Center. Supervising faculty members have current ABPN certification in child and adolescent psychiatry. The residents will participate in assessing, evaluating, and treating a variety of diagnoses in male and female children and adolescents and their families, using a variety of interventional modalities.
The resident experiences at South County Mental Health Center in forensic psychiatry will include experiences evaluating patients’ potential to harm themselves or others, appropriateness for commitment, decisional capacity, disability, and competency.
The resident experience in community psychiatry at SCMHC will provide residents with a cohort of persistently and chronically ill patients in the public sector. This experience will include learning about, and using community resources and services in planning patient care, as well as consulting and working collaboratively with case managers, crisis teams, and other mental health professionals.
