Cost of Attendance
Student Cost of Attendance (COA) budgets are developed each academic year by the Office of Medical Student Financial Aid and are dependent on tuition and fee structures set by the governing boards. Therefore, the COA may be estimated during the early awarding process and is subject to change. The COA is used in the evaluation of financial need and awarding of aid and to give students an estimate of reasonable costs to attend the FAU College of Medicine.
The standard student budgets are based on typical expenses for a single student. Costs for a student's spouse/children are not included in the standard student budget; these expenses are accounted for in the need analysis formula of the FAFSA.
Tuition and Fees:
Tuition and fees are charged at a flat yearly rate, regardless of the actual hours enrolled. The academic term is the full academic year, so all courses taken during the academic year are covered. Tuition is billed twice a year, 50% in the Fall, 50% in the Spring . The tuition and fees are reviewed annually and are subject to change.
Books and Supplies:
Cost is estimated based on a survey of costs associated with required books and supplies. Books and supplies consist of: required textbooks, miscellaneous supplies; and diagnostic instruments such as stethoscope, reflex hammer, and lab coat (M1s only).
Room and Board:
The off campus housing component assumes shared occupancy of rental units in the surrounding community and will be used as the standard, traditional Cost of Attendance budget. Students should consider housing options carefully. Other housing budgets are available by request to the Office of Student Financial Aid. The food component (board) of the student budget assumes a combination of prepared meals and grocery expenses while cooking at home.
Transportation:
Travel costs are estimated based on an allowance for car maintenance, gas, and insurance. This allowance will increase once students enter year three and four and participate in clerkships, etc that will take them away from campus for their medical education.
Personal Expenses:
Personal expenses for FAU COM students take into consideration the following estimated costs: cell phone, clothing, uniforms, haircuts, laundry, cleaning, supplies, membership dues, journal subscriptions, registrations, dental visits, entertainment, etc. It also includes costs for the required Health, Disability and Professional Liability Insurances, and USMLE fees for year 2 and 3 students.
